I was contacted by a London based label called Beating Heart (beatingheartproject.com/) who wanted to make a video for their collaborative music project Saronde. I was thrilled to find out about the project – “Beating Heart invite musicians, artists and producers to remix the world’s largest single collection of vintage African recordings, which were made by Hugh Tracey between the 1920s and 1970s. Sales of ‘Beating Heart – South Africa’ support The Women’s Legal Centre, run by a group of female lawyers striving for gender equality across South Africa”.
After developing a concept & storyboard based on the artwork for the release, we organised a green screen shoot in Nairobi, Kenya, where the featuring artists are based. We hired a local director who sent the files to me so I could begin work. I’d never worked with this genre of music before and I grew to love the track, plus really enjoy the energy and friendliness given from everyone involved. The piece is a performance video with a loose narrative based around spiritual journey, symbolism and orcoming borders.
